Five ways to show yourself some love


We all know how important it is to find time to take care of ourselves, but in between work, family, friends and many other pressing commitments, it can be difficult to focus on our own needs.

If you stop and step back, you might be surprised at how badly you treat yourself sometimes by, for example; skipping meals, getting less than 8 hours sleep and not doing any exercise.

If you’re in need of some self-love (and let’s face it, who isn’t) Yello has found these nuggets of advice which might just ensure you never neglect one of the most important people in your life again – you!

Focus on the positive

Life coaches suggest starting the day by telling yourself something positive and affirming. This can be as simple as saying ‘I love you’ or ‘you are beautiful’ in the mirror, or writing down in a journal something you managed to achieve the day before which made you feel good.

You could also start compiling a list of positive thoughts or sayings which will uplift you and help you to focus on what makes you thankful.

Eat well and drink water

The saying ‘you are what you eat’ may be a cliché but it is true.

By drinking plenty of water and eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, your body will have everything it needs to work at its physical optimum, and you will also start to feel better emotionally and psychologically.

Several free resources are available online to encourage and empower you to eat healthier and cook nutritious food which will maintain your wellbeing including NHS UK, the American Heart Association or Helpguide.org.


Take 20-30 minutes out of the day to break a sweat. Physical exercise is proven to improve your mental wellbeing by releasing ‘happy’ chemicals called endorphins.

Go for a brisk walk, or run, or join a gym. If you like to have company while you exercise as motivation, find a local club who meet on a regular basis.

Meditation is known to increase self-awareness, acceptance and positive emotions while also reducing stress.

Spend 10-15 minutes sitting in a quiet space, away from the hustle and bustle of life, and slow down your mind. Concentrate on your breathing pattern and try to keep your thoughts under control. Use this time to get away from technology and resist any other distractions.

If you need help with meditation then there are lots of free apps available including Headspace and the Mindfulness App.

Do more of what you love

Dedicate at least one day a month to do something just for you; whether that’s a pampering session at a salon, binge watching on Netflix, meeting up with friends, or going to watch a live band.

Plan what you want to do in advance and don’t give up that time for yourself, no matter what other demands there might be on your schedule.
