Guernsey Heritage Festival 19 April to 10 May 2019


The theme for the Guernsey Heritage Festival 2019 is Guernsey Encounters – Throughout the Ages, which focuses on the Bailiwick’s history from evolution to revolution.

This year’s three weeks of festivities include Easter weekend and culminate with the Liberation Day parade and fireworks display on 9 May.

Locals and visitors can step back in time with the guidance of resident experts. The schedule of events includes talks, exhibitions, activities, tours, tastings, and workshops for the entire family.

A discovery timeline will take you on a fascinating journey through our local history.

German Occupation Museum

The German Occupation Museum provides an incredible insight into life in Guernsey during the five years of German occupation. Home to a vast collection of Second World War relics, the various displays allow you to step back in time and imagine what life was from 1940 to 1945.

For the Heritage Festival, three exceptional tours have been created highlighting ten individuals and their heroic encounters during the occupation.

Tours are free and will take place from 4pm – 5.30pm on the following dates:

Revolution and Progress Exhibition

This special exhibition charts Guernsey’s history from 1794 until the dawn of the twentieth century.  Showcasing the meticulously researched story of Jean Breton, attendees will learn how the renowned Guernsey pilot’s seamanship enabled James Saumarez’s flotilla to evade the French squadron in June 1794.

Supporting the theme of Encounters, the exhibition will also feature steamships, newspapers, libraries and urban planning.

Admission is free.

Foraging and Gin Tasting Dinners

Anyone for foraging? Starting at 4.30pm, participants will enjoy a foraging adventure around St Martin’s and then return to the Bella Luce Hotel.

The fun of the forage will be followed by a 30-minute gin tasting session, and the evening will round off with a delicious three-course meal served at 7pm.

Alderney Wildlife and Historic Boat Trips

Experience Alderney’s unique wildlife and history from the ocean. Alderney Wildlife Trust’s expert guide will oversee tours aboard the Sula of Braye and explore some of the most significant seabird colonies in Britain. See first-hand the historical fortifications erected to protect the island.

Tours start at 2pm from the RNLI Station at the harbour, available on the following dates:

Meet Golden Guernsey Goats

What a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal with Guernsey’s rare breed goats. Take a tour of the farm and learn about the history of the island’s goats. You’ll even have the chance to milk or bottle feed a kid goat and sample some delicious cheeses.

All attendees must wear outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.

Cost:  adults £12.00 and children £6.00.

Groups: minimum eight and maximum 20.
