How to host the perfect dinner party

Hosting a dinner party can be stressful, especially when you’re not a ‘natural’ host.

Making sure all of your guests are happy, from their dietary requirements to seating arrangements, and keeping everyone entertained while enjoying the event yourself can be a daunting challenge.

But don’t worry, Yello has found these simple tips which will ensure your dinner party is a complete success.

Be prepared

As with most things in life, if you’re prepared, then you are less likely to fail.

Decide, at least a week before the dinner party, what food you are going to serve and start gathering the necessary ingredients. Find out from your guests if they have any food allergies or intolerances and obviously take these into consideration.

If you’re not a great cook, or don’t enjoy cooking, choose simple recipes which are easy to create on the day of the party or even the day before. Make sure you have plenty of nibbles, such as nuts and crisps of various flavours, that people can snack on while they wait for the main meal to be served.

Work out where you are going to seat everyone and make sure you have enough chairs available for your guests.

Setting the mood

The mood for the dinner party will depend on various aspects including the occasion, the people you have invited, and whether it’s a late afternoon or evening event.

Decide a few days beforehand what kind of music you want to play, if any, and how you will decorate the room/s you’ll be in, along with the dinner table.

If it is a day into night event, think about lighting as the evening goes on, especially if you are going to be outdoors.

It is always a good idea to have some board games and a pack of cards on hand to keep everyone entertained as the evening goes on.

On the day

When the guests arrive make sure they’re greeted at the door and shown where to leave any coats, other personal belongings or gifts.

Show or tell them where the nearest bathroom is so that they feel comfortable.

Take them into the dinner party area and offer them a drink along with nibbles. If your guests do not know each other, be sure to introduce them so that they can immediately join the conversation and feel relaxed.

Make sure there are cups, cutlery and condiments readily available so that your guests do not have to ask and can help themselves when necessary.

Smile and relax

Most guests will enjoy a dinner party once the host appears to be in control and happy.

If you are flapping around, looking stressed, the chances are your guests will notice and it will make them feel uncomfortable.

Smile and try to relax and enjoy the event as well. If you are having fun then your guests are probably going to have fun too.
