Spring/Summer Travel Guide: Five City Breaks for Families
Are you ready to embrace the springtime after the gloom of winter?
One of these five European cities is the perfect destination for your family-friendly spring vacation.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam is much more than its red light district. With its famous canals, it’s a lovely city for a family break in spring, full of boating and biking to keep kids entertained. Check out the NEMO Science Museum housed in a building that looks like the bow of a ship. Children can also participate in hands-on chemistry experiments. The food will also be a hit with young and old, from pancakes and chips to delicious caramel-filled stroopwafels.
Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This impressive walled city sits overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Children will love climbing the walls and looking out over the deep blue waters. You can head up Mount Srđ via cable car or go down to Copacabana beach. There are paddle boats and even kayaking trips out to nearby Lokrum Island for families looking for a little adventure.
As the icy fingers of winter loosen their grip in late spring, the city of Copenhagen comes alive and it’s packed with things children will enjoy. Tivoli Gardens in the city centre is full of gardens, pagodas, fair booths, rides, and the world’s tallest carousel. There’s also a lake and good dining spots. The city is compact making it easy for a family with small children to move around. You can also hop on a train and take in some of the breath-taking castles that are less than an hour away.
Portugal’s capital city is bright, beautiful and quite warm in spring. Enjoy walking around this hilly city by the Tagus River and snack on the famous Pastéis de Belém, a unique tart. Or, take a day-trip out of the city and visit the seaside at Cascais or see the technicolour Pena Palace in Sintra.
With almond trees in bloom, citrus trees laden with fruit and blossoms, and temperatures in the early 20s, Sicily is beautiful in spring. Jet off on a family holiday in the Mediterranean where the children can enjoy the beach and some of the most incredible food you can find. Easter confections, arancini (fried balls of risotto stuffed with ragù), and gelato…even the pickiest child will find something to be excited about.
