Research: Check the builder listings in the Sure Directory and then do your own research. First and foremost, is the builder qualified? Qualified to undertake your particular project? Check for services provided, qualifications, professional membership associations, seek out testimonials and reviews online.

Referrals: Your friends, family, acquaintances and even neighbours who have recently had work done are a great launching pad for your builder search. Talk to those who’ve undertaken projects similar to your own. Remember however that a builder who is recommended by your friends/colleagues may not be the ideal fit for the needs of your construction project.

Know what you need: Talk to various contractors about your needs. Work out specifics and know the requirements for your project so that you’re prepared when the time comes to get an estimate or invite the contractor to view your property.

Get written estimates: It’s advisable to receive two or three contractors’ quotes in order to make comparisons. The written quote should be thorough, including the cost of the materials, estimate labour costs, length of project, etc.

The law of three: When narrowing down your options get a minimum of three references from each contractor.

Contract: Don’t make your decision based on price alone. A lower estimate may represent a contractor who is cutting corners. Ensure that you have a detailed contract drawn up that covers every step of the project – start and end date, payment schedule, materials to be used, proof of liability insurance, sub-contractors involved, etc.
