As July heats up, the warmth of summer provides energy savings opportunities too. Take the time to re-evaluate your energy usage at home and at the office, you may be surprised where you can save some money on your electricity bill.

Guernsey Electricity has provided Sure with 10 energy saving tips for summerto share with you.

1. Turn your heating down

With the warmer weather, now is a good time to turn your heating down or off. However, during the winter, turning your thermostat down just one degree could save you hundreds of pounds on your energy bill.

2. Make the most of Mother Nature

Make the most of the longer, warmer days by ditching your tumble dryer and hanging your clothes outside on a washing line. Not only will it cost you nothing, but your clothes will smell as fresh as air!

3. Keep your fridge and freezer full

Everyone always tells you to keep the fridge closed. But did you know that keeping your fridge and freezer full can also save money? Food acts as insulation and reduces the amount of time that the fridge has to run to stay cool.

4. No half loads

Your washing machine and dishwasher uses a lot of electricity. Minimize the drain and reduce your costs by only washing on full loads.

5. Draught proofing

Unless your home is very new, you will lose some heat through draughts around doors and windows, gaps around the floor, or through the chimney. Get yourself a suitable sealant, insulating strips, wooden beading or even rolled up pieces of newspaper to keep the warm air in and the cooler air outside.

6. Switch to LEDs

LED light bulbs use 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Switch out the most widely used bulbs in your home. Then, replace the rest as they burn out.

7. Wash at 30 degrees

Did you know 90% of the energy consumed by your washing machine goes to heating water? Turn the dial down to 30 and save yourself money on your energy bill.

8. Switch it off

Don’t leave electrical devices such as TVs, DVD players, games consoles, mobile phone chargers and other appliances on standby. If they’re on standby, they are still switched on – which means they’re wasting energy and costing you money.

9. Install Motion Sensors

The warmer weather means we’re all in our gardens more. Now is the perfect time to install motion sensors outside, so that the lights only come on when you need them.

10. Time to upgrade?

Is your fridge on the verge of a breakdown? TV on its last legs? If you’re thinking of upgrading one or more of your appliances, investing in energy efficient models could save you hundreds of pounds a year.

Don’t delay, start your eco-friendly home makeover today.
