We all want to look and feel our best.

Depending on our age, feeling great may take little or no effort. However, for some, it becomes a more focused and dedicated endeavour.

As we age, we need to become more intentional about maintaining our health and wellbeing. Our approach should be holistic, with equal care given to our mind, soul and body as we develop healthy habits.

What does a healthy lifestyle look like? We’ll keep it simple. It’s really all about balance! Aim to create equity between what you eat, how much physical activity you undertake, and the amount of rest you take regularly.

There’s no need to complicate it. A balanced diet, exercise and sleep – it’s what your body needs. By practising these habitually, you’ll help your body to function optimally.

Let’s take a closer look:

A balanced diet

We are what we eat. Consuming at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily and having the recommended intake of water work hand-in-hand to keep you healthy.

Physical activity

Our heart, lungs and muscles benefit when we exercise regularly. As we get older, the rigour and magnitude of our workout routine will change, but we must continue to be physically active.

Proper rest

Sleep, we need it. Although it may appear that our bodies can survive on little, or so we think, good health requires that we have regular periods of respite. A good night’s rest allows the body and mind to recharge.

Many of us approach our health defensively. We begin to implement change in an attempt to halt an illness, be it physical or psychological, after its symptoms make an appearance. However, it’s time we gain the offence and begin adopting practices before the occurrence of a problem.

Let’s change things, and to do so, remember to keep it simple. Make it a habit to maintain a balanced diet, engage in physical activity, and rest properly. With consistent practice of these, you’re well on your way to living a healthy lifestyle!
