Most of us have at least one unsightly scar, but for some, scars from acne, an accident, or surgery can significantly impact their self-esteem.

Some scars are more noticeable than others, and there are various types with different characteristics, including atrophic, hypertrophic, keloid and contracture.

Keloid scars are extremely common among black people. They are usually darker than the surrounding skin and have a raised, thick, puffy appearance. They can also grow beyond the area that was initially injured.

If you have an old scar that you don’t like the look of, you could try one of these four natural ways to improve its appearance.

Aloe Vera

People have traditionally used aloe vera on their skin for centuries. It is known for soothing several skin problems such as psoriasis or sunburn.

Researchers have found that aloesin, a compound naturally found in the aloe plant, does lighten acne scars.

How to use it: Apply a gel or cream with aloe vera to affected skin areas. If you have access to a plant, cut a leaf, scoop out the clear jelly and apply it directly.

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is derived from plants in the Rosaceae family. It is a natural source of vitamins A and C which help with irregular pigmentation and collagen production.

Rosehip oil is said to be useful for fading facial scars or unsightly marks.

How to use it: Apply a topical cream which contains rosehip as an ingredient to the affected area. Remember to always do a patch test before application.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has several skin benefits. It’s a moisturiser, and its fatty acids encourage cell reproduction and boost collagen production.

Coconut oil also contains a naturally high amount of vitamin E, which is an antioxidant. However, a lot more scientific research is needed into the effectiveness of coconut oil on fading scars.

How to use it: Coconut oil is available in its pure form in most supermarkets and pharmacies. Apply it twice a day to the affected area but discontinue use immediately if you have any adverse reaction.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The acids in apple cider vinegar (ACV) may improve the appearance of scars by removing the damaged, outer layers of the skin and promoting regeneration.

Beauty brands often put ACV in products which are used to treat skin discolouration. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties and restores the proper pH levels to your skin.

How to use it: Always dilute apple cider vinegar before applying it. Never put ACV on open wounds.

Scars are common, and there are multiple ways to improve their appearance, but you are advised to see a dermatologist before trying at-home remedies.

A dermatologist is a trained professional who can suggest the best method to minimise the look of your scars.
