The cold winter and short days usually prompt people to plan vacations in far off warm places.

But if you’re happy in the chilly weather then maybe a vacation closer to home is in order? The Christmas markets of Europe are waiting with their bright lights, vin chaud, and artisan goods. For a winter mini break, why not pop over and visit one of Europe’s spectacular Christmas markets?

Here are seven of the best Christmas markets for you to check out.

Berlin, Germany

There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to Christmas markets in Berlin with dozens scattered around the city. The most popular is held in Gendarmenmarkt Square. Here in the village of tents strung with lights, you’ll be able to watch craft makers, candle makers, glassblowers, and other artists, making their wares.

Zagreb, Croatia

In 2017, Zagreb came out on top in a vote for Europe’s best Christmas market organised by European Best Destinations. The market is spread around the city and decked out with spectacular lights and decorations. There is open-air entertainment for shoppers to enjoy.

Nuremberg, Germany

The Christkindlmarkt in Hauptmarkt, the main square in the Nuremberg’s old town, is one of the largest markets you’ll find anywhere.

Strasbourg, France

The famed Christmas market in picturesque Strasbourg is one of the oldest in France. It was first held in 1570. There are over 300 stalls in 12 locations around the city, with the main action found in front of the city’s cathedral.

Prague, Czech Republic

Visit Prague’s Old Town and Wenceslas markets and enjoy some Prague ham and local hot mead to warm you up. Prague landed on 2017 a Condé Nast Traveler list of the best places to spend Christmas.

Vienna, Austria

The Austrian capital comes alive with Christmas markets, but the most famous is the one in City Hall Square. The square becomes a winter fairy tale with lights, reindeer, an ice rink, and all the warming foods, drinks, and sweets you could want.

Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old City plays host to a wonderful Christkindlmarkt with mulled wine and market stalls in front of the cathedral.
