If your family is thinking of heading over to mainland UK for a short break, you might want to visit one of these five cities.

London

When it comes to activities for families it’s hard to beat England’s capital city. London is bursting at the seams with things to do for all ages. From theatres, an abundance of parks, to the London Zoo and the Natural History Museum… it’s difficult to choose. Children who are fans of Harry Potter will love the Warner Brothers Studio Tour just outside of London.  There are also lots of free things to enjoy. To make a stay in London slightly less expensive, look for accommodation in areas like Wimbledon and Greenwich.

Bristol

While Bristol might not be as grand as other cities, it doesn’t lack in charm. It’s full of great options for eating and drinking and lots of activities for children. There is a variety of free attractions, loads of cycle paths, narrow lanes, and parks to explore. A walk across the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge is also must. The area around Blaise Castle is beautiful and has a lovely play area. Older children will enjoy the city’s vibe and cool street art.

Edinburgh

From the narrow, winding streets and stairs of the medieval old town to the stately Georgian-style buildings of the new town, Edinburgh is beautiful and fascinating. It’s rich in history and natural beauty. Have a go climbing Arthur’s Seat (no need to head for the top!), walk the Royal Mile, visit Edinburgh Castle and be blown away by the views. The National Museum of Scotland is a fun, interactive place and is free to enter. You can even take a tour of the hidden streets beneath the city’s hustle and bustle.

Liverpool

There’s a reason that Liverpool is a former European City of Culture. There are stunning cathedrals and no shortage of museums and art galleries.  Take a ferry on the Mersey to get a great view of the city’s skyline and hear about it’s past. Visit Albert Dock with its galleries, big wheel, and family-friendly restaurants. Chester Zoo and Knowsley Safari Park are also near to the city.

York

York is a great destination for a family of history buffs. Head to the castle, walk the city walls and cobbled streets or visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Dungeon, and the National Railway Museum.  Young children will also enjoy a visit to the York Cocoa House.
